No Silk Way for Cyrillic, talk by Tagir Safaev

The Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy in Sokolniki will hold a talk titled No Silk Way for Cyrillic on January 23 at 7:00 pm.

The exciting talk will reveal the history of creation and “plastic” admission of the civil Russian alphabet introduced by Peter the Great, discuss social and cultural background for the reform of national importance, challenges in the course of cyrillization of the Latin alphabet and consequences of fundamental alphabet transformation. Speaker – script developer, leader of the original Script and Typography School, member of the Union of Artists, Tagir Safaev.

Tagir Safayev is a type designer, a graphic designer and a teacher. As a type designer with 30 years of experience Tagir Safayev has come a long way from  photo typesetting machines and the IKARUS program splines to his own Script and Typography School.

From the very first days of studying at Moscow Graphic Arts College (today it is called Moscow State University of Printing Arts) Tagir got interested in fonts and started consciously accumulating knowledge. He concentrated solely on fonts, putting aside graphic art. It was a really professional teaching process of the subject of fonts that made the young designer to immerse himself into the topic, perceiving fonts in the context of history of arts, literature, language and society.
