In October, the Freedom for Education, Culture and Sport Association (Asociatia Liber la Educatie, Cultura si Sport), a Romanian non-governmental organization, announced a national calligraphy contest.
The NGO carries out, supports and promotes educational, cultural, sports and civic activities among all age groups since 2014. It has organized several public projects since 2014. This time its leaders, Oana and Mircea Siclovan, decided to attract attention to the drastic decrease in the usage of handwriting, especially among the youth. With this goal of promoting the practice of handwriting in formal and personal communication, as well as the beauty of the Romanian language in general, on October 27, 2016 they launched a National Calligraphy Contest.
Everyone is invited to participate, regardless of age, gender, social status or the level of calligraphy skill. The contest is realized in cooperation with the Romanian Ministry of Culture and the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy in Moscow. Those who wish to apply must select and calligraphically put down an extract from a work of one of the renowned Romanian writers. The works will be revised by a jury comprised of representatives from the spheres of education, arts, and architecture, as well as professional calligraphers.
There will be prizes for the winners and certificates of participation for all the participants.
The organizers hope that such a project will help revive the youth’s interest in the culture of fine writing – an aim which reflects the mission of the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy: To preserve the beautiful art of calligraphy for future generations. That’s why we couldn’t but support this project. Our best wishes to the organizers and all the participants!
