Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd July 2012

Master Classes at the Hospitalfield Centre for Art & CultureTools and materials personally sourced and selected by Campbell Sandilands on his recent travels

A creative weekend Master class which embraces an inspiring holistic approach to the subject matter and employs tools and materials personally sourced and selected by Campbell Sandilands on his recent travels. Campbell spent 7 years studying various art forms in Japan, completing his MFA at the Tama Art University in Tokyo, before going on to pursue 4 years of training in brush calligraphy with a Master in Kyoto. He notes “I found the process of Japanese calligraphy very liberating, allowing me to focus on a more meditative, intuitive approach to my own work”. Oriental Art allows you to analyze some of your personal experience as well as to gain a historical insight into Sho, Japanese brush calligraphy.

This will be followed by instructions upon sumi ink grinding process which helps to focus the mind. Using this meditative approach, they will be guided by their intuition in making large-scale brush marks on paper. Participants will have the opportunity to sample various styles of brush calligraphy. Oriental calligraphy brushes will be used in conjunction with other brushes, some hand-made, in order to create various exciting marks, which could be honed into a more formal abstract composition at will.
