Interactive agenda of the calligraphy exhibition on Sunday

This Sunday the guests of the International Exhibition of Calligraphy enjoyed even more eventful agenda, including interactive activities and talks by renowned experts.

Nina Markovic, Montenegro, presented two unique illuminated works and also read a lecture about the Miroslav’s Gospel, the most ancient Serbian illuminated manuscript.

Following Markovic, Najip Naqqash, a calligraphy artist, member of the Union of Artists and Arts and Crafts Chamber in Tatarstan, and textual critic, held a workshop dubbed Secrets of Calligraphy on Glass, where he taught the basics of writing on glass, presented the history and meaning of a tugra (personal seal) and let the participants turn their names into a piece of calligraphy art under the guidance of an outstanding expert.

Viktor Novikov, watercolours and graphic artist, calligrapher and icon painter from Khotkovo (Moscow region), held a workshop on traditions and modernity of Vyaz to tell about its history using works by artists from Troitse-Sergiyeva Lavra as examples. He also demonstrated some contemporary interpretations of this ancient decorative writing style and offered a practice session, which involved pointed nib instead of a traditional flat one.

Meet-the-artist session with Alexander Boyarsky from Novosibirsk served as a closing event for the day. At the meeting titled The Magical Music of Calligraphy Alexander spoke of calligraphy styles and tools, demonstrated some historical scripts and shared his approach to calligraphy as an art.

The following week of the International Exhibition of Calligraphy promises to be no less entertaining. We look forward to seeing you at Festivalnaya Square in Sokolniki Park before September 10.
