Imperial Couple view calligraphy works at Mainichi Shodo Exhibition
Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko viewed calligraphy works on July 25 on display at the 70th Mainichi Shodo Exhibition at The National Art Center, Tokyo, in the Roppongi district of the capital.
The Imperial Couple was greeted by the museum's director general Tamotsu Aoki and Yutaka Asahina, chairman of The Mainichi Newspapers Co. They viewed pieces by calligraphers such as 77-year-old Bokushun Kito, who received the education minister's prize for his work, the highest accolade at the exhibition.
The Emperor and Empress also paid a visit to a special exhibition held at the same time, titled "Bokkon no Subaru," and inspected the calligraphy works of Ai Xin Jue Luo Pu Yi (1906-1967), the last emperor of the Qing Dynasty, and his brother Ai Xin Jue Luo Pu Jie (1907-1994). They enjoyed talking to Kosei Fukunaga, 78, the second daughter of Pu Jie, inside the art museum.
The first part of the Mainichi Shodo Exhibition, sponsored by The Mainichi Newspapers Co. and the Mainichi Shodo Association, will be held in Tokyo through July 30, to be followed by the second part of the exhibit from Aug. 1 to Aug. 5.
