The exhibition is devoted to the world history of writing and calculation. The collection of different writing utensils, counting devices and related items is presented by the exhibits from the funds of the State Museum of the History of St. Petersburg, the National Library of Russia and the State Library For The Blind.
The interactive section at the beginning of the exposition showcases to the visitors the ancient writing systems that different nations used, the history of the alphabet, the Cyrillic alphabet and Russian writing occurrence, as well as ancient writing and calculation utensils.
In the early Middle Ages mankind began to use feathers. As it turned out, a quill was the most suitable of all of them to write with (it was proposed to use only feathers torn out of young geese from the left wing in spring, and these could be only the five external feathers). The exhibition will provide visitors an opportunity to see what a real writing quill looks like now, as well as to learn about the selection, processing and sharpening technology of quills (the quills are provided by the Leningrad Zoo).
The guests will be offered to use various kinds of writing utensils (quills, pens with an insert and more) and to learn calligraphy writing by the methodology of the first half of the 19th — the middle of the 20th century.
The entrance to the master-classes is carried out by separate tickets of the exhibition or by a single ticket for visiting the exhibitions of the Peter and Paul Fortress.
The exhibition will run until November 9th, 2014.
