Chronicles of the Days of Slavic Script

The Days of Slavic Script exhibition with a rich program of master classes was held at the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy on Sunday, May 22. Although the weekend was hot and a lot of Muscovites left the town, the museum was visited by many guests; during the day the museum was constantly jam-packed. In addition, the group of pupils from Kosinskaya parochial school and children's cultural center “Pokrov” from the town of Yubileiny has specially arrived in Moscow for the event.

The program was opened by Andrei Sannikov’s master class “The Anthology of Russian Cursive Handwriting”. During his presentation, Andrei demonstrated the art of working with birch bark manuscripts. Next, the floor was taken by Artyom Lebedev, giving a talk on greeting cards, and Nina Kozubova with the history of the Slavic Cyrillic cursive handwriting and ornate lettering, followed by Yuri Koverdyayev, curator of the National School of Calligraphy, conducting a master class “Half-uncial Cyrillic book hand and the way it was written in Old Russia”. Masterpieces by Slavonic calligraphy masters, members of the International Exhibition of Calligraphy, were on display.

Most of the guests were reluctant to leave the museum after the completion of the master classes. Many of them enrolled into the National School of Calligraphy with Olga Kaluzhskaya, our education manager. We’d like to remind you that the National School of Calligraphy will be closed for the summer from June 2. But now you can fill in an application form at the museum, or write a letter to Olga Shaburova, head of the school.
