Chinese painting and calligraphy coming to Jakarta

At the request of Chinese president Xi Jinping, who first proposed the idea of a 21st century «maritime silk road» when speaking in Indonesia in 2013, PT Bauing Construction Indonesia has initiated a Chinese painting and calligraphy exhibition, set to be held in Balai Kartini, Jakarta, later this month.

The exhibition is titled The 21st Century Maritime Silk Road Embracement of Chinese Culture in Indonesia and will run for two days, Nov. 17 to 18, but will only be open to the public on the second day. On the first day of the exhibition, around 400 special guests are set to attend. Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla is scheduled to open the event.

As the event's host, the Bauing Group Indonesia hopes that the painting and calligraphy exhibition can introduce Chinese painting and calligraphy art to a broader Indonesian audience and strengthen cultural connections between Indonesia and China.

«There will be around 89 Chinese artworks made between 1970 and 2015 exhibited here, in Jakarta, with paintings making up around 70 percent of the works and calligraphy 30 percent,» exhibition committee head Jefry Teguh said in a press conference on Monday. Two paintings — including one by Zhou Guocheng, a Chinese painting and calligraphy maestro — will be auctioned at the event with proceeds being donated to the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI).

Jefry explained that one of the highlights of the exhibition was a 60-meter-long painting made by dozens of landscape painters led by Zhou Guocheng. Another painting being exhibited, «Hakka Mountains», depicts the people and the preserved Ming Dynasty culture of the Hakka mountains.
