A $3,000 grant from the Cave Creek Unified Education Foundation recently purchased authentic Chinese calligraphy brushes, specialty paper and art materials for Sonoran Trails Middle School in Cave Creek. CCUEF reported that the awarded grant brought the school’s art and Chinese departments together for a project called «Share the Art.» Before the grant monies were issued, Sonoran Trails Middle School students in the Chinese programme received instruction on Chinese cultural practices solely through videos. But CCUEF spokesperson said that the $3,000 grant will now allow these students to receive hands-on training in Chinese calligraphy.
For Share the Art, Sonoran Trails Middle School teamed up with No. Six School in Ychang, China. Middle school students from No. Six School are the ones who developed the instructional calligraphy video for these Cave Creek area students.
Subsequently, students from Sonoran Trails' Chinese programme taught a Chinese calligraphy class for Sonoran Trails' art students. This collaboration is expected to continue, possibly to include a visit with Sonoran Trails' sister school in China next year.
