A World Famous Mezuzah in the Museum of Calligraphy

August 9th, 2009, Moscow, Agency of Jewish News (personal correspondent) — The World Famous Mezuzah is a renowned masterpiece of sacred calligraphy listed in the Guinness Book of Records and will be presented on August 14th on the occasion of the anniversary of the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy.

The official opening for press starts at noon, in Exhibit Hall 7 of Sokolniki Exhibition and Convention Centre.

The exhibition is free for the audience from 2 pm — 7 pm.

The official ceremony will be attended by:

— Andrei Busygin, Deputy Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation.

— Grigory Ordjonikidze, Secretary of the UNESCO Commission of the Russian Federation

— Paul Vandoren, Deputy Head of the Delegation of the European Commission to Russia.

— Evgeny Bogatyrev, Director of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts

Also:

— Representatives of embassies of CIS, Europe, Asia in Russia.

— Heads of culture centers and NGOs.

Note:

The Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy was established on August 14th, 2008 as the first museum in Russia dedicated to the art of handwriting. The museum was initiated by the National Union of Calligraphers and Sokolniki Exhibition and Convention Centre.

It was officially admitted as the member of the International Council of Museums (ICOM).

The museum exposition contains unique samples of handwriting, world masterpieces by renowned calligraphy artists.

A mezuzah is a sacred Jewish scroll of parchment.
The most widespread manuscript in the world with a long history of over 3000 years.

The World Famous Mezuzah is executed by an outstanding Israeli calligrapher Avraham Borshevsky.

It is listed in The Guinness Book of Records as the largest mezuzah in the world’s history.

The masterpiece has always been stored in a private collection in its homeland Jerusalem.

The artwork will be brought to Moscow from the Holy Land and for the first time ever the general public will have a chance to see it.
